Hurricane Melissa Relief
Help Jamaica #CABCares
Across the Caribbean, climate-related disasters are no longer distant possibilities; they are becoming our shared reality. What Jamaica is enduring today could be any of our islands tomorrow. Just three weeks ago, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with devastating force, leaving behind shattered homes, disrupted lives, and communities struggling to recover.
Over these past weeks, the Caribbean Association of Banks has been in close contact with our members and partners on the ground, listening to their stories and understanding the depth of their challenges. The accounts are heartbreaking:
- Children in crisis: Many have been displaced, unable to attend school, and live in fear at the sound of rain or wind. Homes for differently abled children are struggling to provide even the most basic comforts.
- Access to clean water: Entire communities remain without safe drinking water or water for hygiene because of power outages and contamination.
- Living conditions: Families and staff members are without adequate shelter, with homes damaged or roofs destroyed. Yet, despite these hardships, many employees make heroic efforts to continue serving the public.
As we enter this season of giving, these stories remind us that now is the time to stand together as a Caribbean family. Christmas is a time of hope, compassion, and generosity and this year, we have an opportunity to make those values real for our brothers and sisters in Jamaica.
