Hydroponic solar greenhouses promote food security in the Caribbean

Alquimi Renewables and Megalo Solutions Inc., two US based firms, have partnered up to provide off-grid solar powered greenhouses to Latin America and the Caribbean. A pilot project has been launched in St. Croix and the US Virgin Islands.

The Caribbean islands currently import USD 1.3B in fresh produce from the US. The companies hope to position themselves to accommodate the shift from importation of produce to regionally produced food, effectively improving the balance of trade while creating jobs and food security.
